Lifestyle: Happy Holidays from brokenspokes and NJ BMX Szine
BMX Lifestyle Wow, another year has rolled by us here in BMX land in the great state of New Jersey. What a year. Lots of freestyle contests by CJS, Crazy Bill, BMX Invasion, Shields, Incline..all great supporters of BMX. Our first AA Pro of the new generation, Phil Delizia. More freestyle pros then we know what to do with in NJ. A Pro-Am Open racing series run by two old school BMXers themselves, Rich Farside and Glen Knapper. NJ once again stepped it up another notch. For such a small state we have one hell of a pool of talent. For 2008 brokenspokes will be covering whatever events it can to support the people supporting BMX and as usual we will be open to suggestions on what to do to make things better and of course, the forums will be there to ask questions, b.s. and have fun.
Before I cap this year though, I want to thank some people.
The state NBL board, Scott (and Scott's wife Donna, the first lady of NJ BMX, who has to deal with all the responsibilities that come with Scott being Commissioner
), Vinny, Lisa, and Nancy. The believed in us and held the door open as we squeezed in to make changes. It was a little bumpy at times but we got done what needed to get done.
Mike Vanderhoff for stepping up and going in when Chris Vliet (thanks for the pm man, the whole state held their breath when you went down) took that digger earlier in the year. Do not stop coming out bro, we need all the people we can get that have the heart you do.
Al Dimino and his dad, and The Knappers. Eastern PA has always been a huge part of NJ and you guys have brought it all into the new generation in a huge way. Charlie Huber would be stoked.
The Cranmers. All of them. Go buy something at SC, even if it's just some valve caps. 20 years from now, some guy will be going on about them, like I do about the Gleasons, Warnicke..etc.
Pat Shields, he's pushing hard up there in Flemington.
Al at CJS. The man is changing BMX with his crew up there near Edison.
Rich Farside. No matter how hard this guy got pushed out of the way he kept elbowing his butt back in to get the job done. The guy hates recognition beyond winning races, so I'm not saying anything more.
Glen Knapper. Raised the bar on BMX racing in NJ, by way of PA.
Lee Matos for stepping up to raise the bar on the NJBMX Inc. website in NJ.
Ant-Dog for stepping up when my girl got insulted heavily. I will never forget that.
Rich Carolan, when the insanity of getting things done began to bog down my brain, he let me spill out my guts for hours at a time. For letting me know what the Carolan Foundation is all about and making me feel like there is still some hope for all this. I still feel Rich will be back in the racing scene, just wait and see.
All the riders and their parents who stop by, look at the pics, put up posts, tell me their thoughts and opinions, all in an attempt to make BMX better in NJ. It's all BMX to me guys and gals and I wanna know what can be done to make it better, and from what I see now, I know some people who have learned how to use this place.

and finally, my lady,
Christine Blake.
Who stood by me as we built our home, as I was gone almost every weekend covering races, who still told me to "get the job done" even after "the incident". Who's gonna let me build a trail around our house so we can do some middle aged BMXin on home turf. Whenever something or someone bitch slaps me into thinking, "is this all worth it?", she makes me realize that no cause worth fighting for is easy.

I will see you all in 2008, with more coverage, my new SE Ripper (thanks SC), more Szines, more videos, more pics, more ideas, more b.s. and of course...

MORE FUN.
When people ask, "where do you live?", tell them "NJ, the BMX state"
2008, BMX is taking over.
Brett

Lifestyle: Old School Racers, A moment of silence please.
BMX Lifestyle It is brokenspokes.net sincere regret that we relay the news of the passing of Kelly Gleason, daughter of CJBMX originators and Bicycle World owners Bob and Carol Gleason. Those of you who are old enough to remember the early days of BMX racing in NJ will remember Kelly as one of Carol's daughters who was always working registration and scoring and also as one of the innovators of many of the things that the NBL does to speed things along even to this day. As an adult Kelly was a freelance special effects and make-up artist for stage and screen productions, even receiving an Emmy for her work on Angels in America. A multi talented and generous individual, Kelly also was very active with The New York City Rescue Mission. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the New York City Rescue Mission at nycrescue.org
Kelly will be missed but she will never be forgotten. The old school BMXers bow their heads in rememberance.

Lifestyle: Everyone who visits this site needs to watch this.
BMX Lifestyle If you want to understand where I am coming from and why I take a very hard stance on "for the riders". You need to read this and watch these youtube clips. I'm sure most of you have heard of what happened to Stephen Murray at the Dew Tour this year. I catch alot of heat about me saying "you can't understand this until you have lived it, grew up with it, done it, PUSHED YOURSELF TO YOUR ABSOLUTE LIMITS for the love of BMX". We are (the riders) are acutely aware of the fact that this could all be over in an instant, what we do whether it's racing or freestyle is dangerous, most of us will never have a serious significant injury but it can and does happen. If you are involved in BMX and you are not doing everything you can to make people happy about BMX and make them want to be involved in BMX, then you are a detriment to this sport. I'm sorry, but after you watch these 3 short clips and hear what these riders have to say, you better all wake up in this state. This is not a joke, and if people get aggravated because others speak up and ask them to step it up like they have or to push "a little harder because we (the riders) think they should".
For BMXers there is no union, no retirement plans, in effect there is no future for a BMXer past possible a few years as a top pro racer or freestyler then it's, see ya later. I'd like to see a bit of a brighter future for these guys and gals that I believe in, what would you like to see. Some people need to grow up and realize when they've done BMX wrong and make steps to improve it, otherwise what future is there for the sport.

Lifestyle: JRP National Rider Of The Month
BMX Lifestyle Here it is ladies and gentlemen, in cooperation with BMXMANIA.COM the new award plate on the block, picked by you the general population is open for business. Open to Amateurs and Pros alike, from anywhere in the United States. The rules are simple: Their will be Four (4) Categories up for grabs each month; Female (Amateur Ages 3-34), Male (Amateur Ages 3-34), Old Timer (Amateur Ages 35 and UP!!! Male or Female) and last but not least Pro (Actively Racing Male or Female, any sanction as long as it is a pro/girl pro/vet pro equivalent class). For nominations/votes to count towards this award, they MUST contain a NOMINATION in Each Category listed above. Track owner and operators, team managers and owners are welcome to promote racers from their respective tracks/teams. The riders chosen in each category should exemplify BMX Racing on and off the track. These riders DO NOT have to be nationally ranked, nor do they even need to ride the national circuit, those types of awards are given out by the sanctions. This award is meant to provide exposure to those riders/athletes that help promote BMX Racing in a positive light, mentoring to competitors our sport along the way. I know of a lot of local riders in my area alone that deserve this award, but I like you must vote to give them that privilege. I see this award growing over the next several months as new sponsors/supporters come onboard. To avoid any conflict in pro rider’s sponsorships, the riders are not required to endorse or support my or any other product included in this award that would otherwise jeopardize their sponsorship status, since this award is intended in providing acknowledgment of riders that have a positive impact on us the BMX community.

To Nominate your favorite riders for this award email them to: NATIONALROTM@yahoo.com
For pictures of the award plates click read more.

Racing: I need a break.
BMX Lifestyle

Guys.

I'm tired. These past 3 years have been non-stop trying to make positive change in BMX in NJ with alot of emphasis on racing.

I realized what I have been sacrificing on Saturday when someone said at the NJBMX State Meeting, "I guess we can thank Brett's girlfriend for that". (by the way, the comment was made as a compliment to her.)

Yes. The website is down again. (back up again, welcome to the rollercoaster of my life..actually our lives, lol!) I don't know why, and right now I don't care. I need some time away from the lunacy that is BMX racing in NJ. Thanks to everyone who has helped me all this time but I need to restore some balance in my life.

Brett

PS: Be sure to check Scotty and the front flip whip on the Dew Tour this week.
